this is why the new superman movie did so well. it was classic. no morally grey stuff, just a hero doing his absolute best against a villain.

one of my biggest gripes about this morally grey characters discussion is how people seem to think depth = morally grey. people seem to think that a villain with a sad back story is automatically "morally grey."

A lot of writers/people often confuse morally grey to be 100% synonymous with depth, when that’s just not the case, you can make a completely good hero (Superman) or a completely evil villain (Homelander) still be very complex & have a lot of depth. The morally grey characters say like Jaime Lannister are fantastic but they are not the only way to write characters in depth, evil people, heroic people at the end of the day are still human begins (or in a story with aliens/species etc have human characteristics), human beings are inherently complex people it doesn’t matter which side of the morality spectrum you are, and a hero/villain should parallel or contrast each other making their dynamic have more depth. This whole tired notion that ‘grey is the only way to write depth’ is so absurd and even tho it was popularised with Thrones, ASOIAF has a LOT of morally heroic & completely evil villains too, grey has just become a lazy way to give a character depth but it’s just taking away so much more (house of the dragon, a lot of modern Disney movies etc are victims of this)

Most villains IRL are not motivated by anything deeper than greed or selfishness. They just don’t care about other people.

No. The idea that there are "inherently evil" people is a comfortable, cowardly fantasy for people who want to believe in their own moral superiority. It's important to show the villains humanity, not to excuse them, but to drive home the point that there are no Evil Them vs.Good Us. Terrible things are committed not by evil monsters from hell, but by ordinary humans - they can be your neighbor, your cousin, your ex classmate. It's very important to remember that, because if you believe that you are not capable of horrible things simply because you are inherently "good", you grow complacent. You start believing in the "evil nature" of people you despise and stop paying attentions to the factors that produce those people.

I want more pure evil villains and pure good hero’s because society can’t handle complex characters with multiple layers

Clear moral boundaries help us recognize harm. Understanding how people become harmful helps us prevent it. Stories probably need both, but not all audiences are in the same place to use both.

No, actually, being morally gray is not bad if you know which points you can leverage. Like, if you know how to set the scale, you're good to go. A character who's very benevolent but also extremely evil can be read as morally gray.
On the other hand, characters who are one-dimensionally evil can be boring if you write them wrong. Just a tea for thoughts ☕️

all people all morally grey and everyone has a backstory, still. id rather take the story that depends on the hero's moral of good and evil than some "we're all broken"

I really like how George rr Martin writes his characters. They may have bad pasts or difficult ones but those pasts are not used to justify their actions nor to pity them.

That’s why I love the ballad of songbirds and snakes. Suzanne Collins fully dissects and depicts Snow as an interesting character with so much depth, whilst also making it explicitly clear that he’s 100% a villain, through and through since his childhood

How many true villains are there in real life? As in villains without a single redeeming quality, who have never done a morally good thing in their lives? I’d argue it is more realistic that villains are morally grey because the vast majority of people are morally grey.

I want to morally gray character that knows that they are MG and don't care about opinion from others. Like for example villain who is villain in hero story but hero in someone else story. Nowadays morally gray character are A very one dimensional and B love interest who is good only for their "mate".

The question is what we actually mean with being morally gray. In reality for most people their actions make sense to themselves in their word view, and a lot of times “evil people” just have a very distorted view of the world. A good example from fantasy of this is Zuko in avatar the last airbender. He starts out as a villan but turns into a hero, although he doesn’t actually change all that much however his worldview changes massively. He’s a rather empathetic character from the start but in the beginning it’s just directed towards his own people like he was taught. Basically people generally don’t see themselves as “evil” no matter how horrible they are because their own actions make sense to themselves.
