Risk of abrasive damage: Salt acts as a very coarse abrasive. It can scratch your enamel, which over time can wear down the enamel and actually make your teeth yellower, as the inner dentin (which is yellow) becomes more visible. Gum irritation: Salt can irritate your gums and lead to sores or pain, especially if you already have sensitive gums. No true whitening: Salt does not whiten. It may remove superficial deposits (plaque) in the same way as a scrubbing sponge, but it cannot change the natural color of your teeth. Short-term effect: Although your teeth feel smooth immediately after, the method is harsh. Toothpaste already contains the necessary abrasives in a measured amount.
