@shopgooddogsonly: i used to think building in public was the smartest thing ever and now i’m like wait… why do 3,000 people know my business problems in real time 😭 still sharing the journey, just less “here’s every detail of my business strategy” and more “come with me while i figure life out in toronto while building a brand” #BuildingInPublic #FounderTok #TorontoCreator #BusinessTok #WomenInBusiness

Building in public just attracts other founders 😭

Building in public doesn’t mean showing 100% of the build, it’s about strategically taking the audience on the journey with a little drop of vulnerability to build connection so they’re ready to buy by time of launch. It’s incredibly effective when strategically executed (the top fastest growing brands in the UK right now all adopt this strategy!)

Completely agree, plus you attract people interested in entrepreneurship because they want to start a business themselves rather than actual potential clients who will buy

1000%!! Building in public only works for very specific types of creators, normally who already have a following. If you’re building a brand that is supposed to be aspirational/premium it’s challenging when the inner working is exposed on the Internet

I think the downfall of this is, people tend to overshare without realizing it. Also, at some point you get confused on who the content you put out is for, you start making content that other founders relate to but is irrelevant to your audience.

I think building in public is a distraction from building at all.

It’s not an all or nothing. Building in public doesn’t have to mean oversharing. It could be sharing learnings in hindsight rather than looking a mess

As a consumer, i do not care about anyone's brand backstory or rants. I scroll past them sometimes block them. I just wanna see the matcha or whatever they're selling.

I really think the building in public only works if you’re actually really successful at building quickly lol

Yup. And it also welcomes unsolicited advice in the comments where people assume you haven’t done your due diligence or applied yourself to the issue.

i also found that my content was reaching other founders and not my ideal costumers who aren't even founders. i was forced to stop building in public and start from scratch.

Loppique World (Jewelry Brand) :
Building in public can cause unnecessary over exposure. There is always going to be a supplier issue, a fulfillment issue and a customer service issue. The reason why it is called “business “ is to proffer solutions. Day in day out, you are going to be solving problems while dealing with your personal life

Building in public is cool, but it also exposes you to a lot of vulnerability!

Lauren S, behind Sleep or Die, is a great example of how she separates her personal brand of Lauren (sneak peek behind building in public) and her consumer brand product (premium, edgy, aspirational)

I think the other thing people fail to understand is that for a customer to fully trust you as a brand, you need to have a certain level of authority and inaccessibility that makes them want to buy into your world. I think by now we understand that people are buying the feeling of association rather than just the actual product itself

I’ve had an online biz for 6 years. My customers have never see a BTS from me… it ain’t their business what I’m doing behind the scenes. I’m crying, ripping my hair out and trying to figure it out in privateeee!

Hmmm :
It depends on how you want the brand to be perceived. Luxury brands don’t show you bts they show you what their product stands for and how you fit in their world. I think in the world of oversharing sometimes less is more.
