You’re so painfully right. As a political scientist, I wanted to add some nuance. This moment in history when the majority of people realize that they’re being manipulated and don’t want to care anymore has happened over and over all around the world and results in one of two outcomes: the population makes the choice to stop caring because finding honest politicians is too hard or taking action feels too drastic or unsafe OR the population makes the choice to force a change despite any risks. Politics will always involve some level of showmanship and manipulation by nature the job, you can’t get masses of people on the same page without some benevolent manipulation. How that’s carried out though, the systems it runs through, are entirely in the hands of the unified population, it’s just about whether that unified population values comfort over risk for toward. People in the US are both largely comfortable in their day to day lives and so highly divided that they don’t notice the discomfort around them. Unity and risk is the solution, albeit a difficult one, but the greatest American gaslight is that it’s too difficult to try to achieve. Opting out entirely serves their interests directly by pushes us deeper into a collective inability to advocate for ourselves.
