The mystics of various ancient traditions — from the Eleusinian mysteries onward — were wont to claim that it is our so-called material ignorance that is the cause for our suffering; that our once pure “souls” have woefully descended into a spiritually deadening, “lesser” form, which conceals the arcane essence from the uninitiated. But no — the true veil is our hubris. The true veil is our inability to accept that the sickness had its genesis in the idea that we were ever divine to begin with. And until we have the strength and the courage to acknowledge that it is not this material ignorance, but rather this phantasmagoric, all too human conviction that we are divine in essence that lies at the root of our suffering, then we will continue to live in dissonance. The mystics, for all their insight, inverted the truth, for it is not our decent into the material that blinds us — quite the contrary. Heraclitus once said that it is our hubris to be quenched, lest it be quenched for us. Nietzsche contrasts the way in which the Greeks and Christians employed their gods. In the former, man saw in them reflection of the most noble specimens of their own cast, and in those reflections man felt the animal in himself revered. Christianity (and really countless other traditions, Nietzsche attacked Christianity in particular for obvious reasons) locked the animal in a cage, where it was forced to turn against itself — to ravage itself. #aesthetic #philosophy #foryou
