literally no professional does this...they use a tape tube and tape that whole room in 20 minutes

Been taping for 20+ years. The only time I’ve ever had to cut any already installed drywall, is if it was broken or if there was loose paper. With that being said, I’ve never had any cracks in my work

I have been taping drywall for 25 years. everything from cookie cutters to 5 million dollar mansions. if the boarders don't v out but joints, I do. not only does it make it flat but it let the mud seep in and prevents dry spots. prep is everything 😉

I’m no drywall expert but aren’t the edges of the drywall already tapered to hold more mud when finishing?

You should cut those joints before you hang the drywall. It’ll probably be much easier.

I'm definitely no expert, just a home handyman sometimes. If you put tape over the join, how is the compound getting into the bit you cut out?

Should we install the drywall with a gap?

The company I worked for requires dry wall to be have a gap between all dry wall boards. So it is not quite your grandma's hack only.

You extremely rarely ever get vertical wall cracks like this. Not worth the energy or effort.

Why not just leave a tiny gap between the edges when installing the entire sheet? Duh

Whatever you do, dont do that! Just use mesh tape and use spray adhesive to the jounts of the panel.

Mud and drywall does not create a bond strong enough to warrant this extra work. The paper to paper is what gives strength.

or use fiberglass mesh tape and be done with it

The edges of the drywall are already beveled. If you hang it properly, you don’t have a problem wow.
