well, girl, as an autistic person who struggles with all of that... it's not a competition. It's a SPECTRUM for a reason, just because you think you've got it worse doesn't mean you should get special treatment

Iโ€™ve learned to mask it all, just cause you donโ€™t see it doesnโ€™t mean they donโ€™t struggle with it. Letโ€™s not invalidate others!

I'm sorry but the spectrum concept is real and important because autistic people can struggles with several different things, have several different symptoms and need help at very different level. I'm sorry if you feel invalidated by people who have a low support need, but trust me that if they're on the spectrum they DO struggle with something, maybe they just don't share, don't know or mask a lot. I'm diagnosed with level 1 and I've been struggling with basic chores and social cues since I was a kid, I have sensory issues and meldowns and I get overtimulated very easily, but I still was diagnosed as a teen because I've been high masking my whole childood without even knowing. I also have a level 3 sister and a level 2 cousin and they both got diagnosed at a young age because they had an higher support need, but we share a lot of traits and symptoms, just at "different levels". So, again, I'm sorry for your situation but the spectrum concept is really important in autism and no one should feel invalidated by someone else's experience because we're all different people who function in different ways from each other just like everyone else.

I donโ€™t really have sensory issues, no, but hopefully the fact that I havenโ€™t made a friend since elementary school and I get treated worse by default without ever knowing what Iโ€™m doing wrong is โ€œbad enoughโ€ for you

Itโ€™s definitely being thrown around so much more now than Iโ€™ve ever heard it before. People also love to diagnose themselves and say they have something with no real diagnosis ๐Ÿ™„. Itโ€™s like the new โ€œcuteโ€ or โ€œquirkyโ€ thing is to be โ€œon the spectrumโ€ ๐Ÿ™„๐Ÿ™„๐Ÿ™„. SMH.

I hate the "it's a spectrum" thing, like PLEASE make new names for different parts of the spectrum. I have an autism diagnosis, but I don't have sensory issues, meltdowns, nor overstimulation. So whenever I seek therapy, therapist assume I am stereotypical autist and tell me to "avoid bright lights" or "go rest when you feel overwhelmed". Like???

I'm at the "lighter end" of the spectrum, while also having ADHD. And while some experiences can be similar I can't compare my struggles to the people on the "other end" of the spectrum. It may be one spectrum but how it impacts the individual is so different. Making it a spectrum has definitely some pros but just as many cons. To raise awareness for the whole spectrum is very hard.

OK so this is how it works : autism is a spectrum, but it still has criteria. To put it simply : there's as many cases of autism as there are AUTISTIC PERSONS. It doesn't mean "Oh everyone is one the spectrum, it's a spectrum!".

Some people can use a label as a way to avoid accountability. And some people may be very high masking and donโ€™t show people their struggles. Itโ€™s hard to differentiate between the two.
