I feel like dealerships could retain more technicians if they paid straight time. Flat rate is the biggest scam in the Automotive industry. Heavy Duty mechanics get paid straight time so why shouldn’t Automotive mechanics?

I just left a volvo truck dealer for these exact reasons. I was the working foreman and wearing 4 hats got old. asked for training, told I won't be sent out ever and no further raises. so I walked out. make same money better benefits doing mobile for a conpany

Note: they dont send techs to training to cap off pay. Some manufacturers only require one master tech for the shop to be “shop competent” best way to loose your best techs…

I spent 10 years in the dealership world . And this is exactly why I left . And the ASE certifications have become an overpriced joke . It started out as a great thing but turned into a profit based certification program. And most companies refused to pay for the testing . Today’s automotive industry is doomed . Horrible management. And now everything is a warranty repair issue. With little to no flat rate compensation.

i wanted to get to a wage that meets the standards where i work at and that would have been 2 dollar increase. they said no i put 2 weeks in. went to another job and was paid more then standard. 3 months later they called back and asked if i would come back for same price i left at. i told them why i would leave current job to where i would be paid less. and hung up. the next day they called back and offered the standard pay. and i said ibmake more doing the same job. beat that and i will come back. they offered 7 dollars more and i said give me 2 weeks and i will be back

This was how I was feeling after my first engine tear down. I put rebuilt it and put it back in the car and had it started and had to take it out and re time it again

Dealer I worked at bought us pizza, no bonus $, for consecutively breaking record profit months. That weekend they took everybody except the techs, to a fancy dinner and gave bonus checks. The entire dealer ate pizza when we got it.

If your a business owner reading this.. the worst, categorically worst, time to offer a raise is when they hand their notice. Just proves to them that you knew they were undervalued.

works for a raise and to lower a bill. get a high cable bill to many times for ex. Just call amd want to cancel, they will give you a discount or a new lower rate. never fails 😏
