Mine were taught to never start the fight. Ending the fight is fine.

schools have a zero tolerance policy. it really doesn't work. you cant suspend the kids defending himself because it emboldens the bully

That's the problem with these so called anti bullying policies. The bully rarely if ever feels the repercussions of their actions while kids who stand up for themselves are the ones who get punished. Which in turn creates a nice target rich environment for the school yard bully. School officials end rewarding the bully for being a bully. 🙄

Teach your kid to report bulling to a trusted adult and not take matters into their own hands. If he had done this the other child would be the only one with consequences. Children should not be taught to solve things with violence. We will never be a peaceful society until parents smarten up!

Pro tip from a teacher - get your kid to go to a teacher after asking the bully to stop and before fighting. They won't get suspended because the teacher didn't do their job, stopping the bullying.

So your son gets bullied, stands up for himself and gets punished for it. What happened to the kid that bullied him?

it's called accountability .......the bully fafo and it didn't turn out his way. The school now makes him the victim and your son is the bad guy for defending himself. The school is making this world soft and making a whole society of entitled kids.

I can’t think of one principal that would allow you to sit down with someone else’s child in a meeting without that parent present. I’ve been teaching 30 years and that doesn’t happen.

The school must act “en loco parentis” In other words, the school is responsible to protect students while under the school’s care. Go back to the school with a lawyer (law school’s can provide free representation). Threaten to sue the principal, teacher & the school district if they allow the bullying to continue.

In my state, by law both students must leave. (So the other kid probably had to leave too) Everything was done as standard procedure EXCEPT the other child should not have been in your meeting. That is a violation.
