Michèle :
I have 9/9 hypermobility syndrome & the thing that took me years to learn was to respect the narrow margin within which I *won’t* get injured 🤣

staying in the gym is the only way I take away the pain of hypermobility. it makes me so happy to see people teaching exercise+hypermobility bc its SO RARE. I've always had to figure it out for myself bc normal-mobile people don't get it at all. its so important to know it & know it right bc regular exercise is such a key tool for us to eliminate the pain of just living while hypermobile.

I think I accidentally found out about the creating tension when I did any bench press 👍

this makes soooo much sense as someone with hypermobility who's always confused when my trainers say "you should feel that here" and I feel nothing 😭

Ok. I’m here for this. Because when I lift as a hypermobile person… I don’t feel it in the right spot. I have little to no feedback for correct form. But I know building strength is really important for my quality of life. I’ve had to take up swimming, yoga, running, and more activity based exercise.

So you have to mentally apply the tension to the muscle while doing the movement. Which makes mind-muscle connection so much more important. So lifting for hyper mobile population actually requires more skill. Wow!

Would this also be why I can’t “feel the stretch “ when stretching?

I think I started doing this instinctively in the last few years. But it’s so much of a mental exercise 1. Tense muscle 2. Check posture 3. Lock abs 4. Tuck pelvis 5. Unlock knees 6. Breathe… and repeat Rep 2 🥲

Is hypermobility a spectrum? Because I’m pretty sure I’m hypermobile, but not as much as you?..

Whenever I’d “stretch” to warm up, people would freak out because I have to go into a ridiculous hyper extension just to feel any “stretch”. This explains it so well!

Heather :
I was diagnosed with hEDS at 37. I was in PT last year because I’d been told I had arthritis in my knee for years. Turns out I didn’t, I learned at 39 that I had been dislocating it as I walked since I was a teenager. 🙃 So she taught me to use resistance bands in my workouts. Not to make the workout harder, but to level the playing field. I was over extending my joints and had NO idea because I didn’t feel it. The resistance bands put that tension on my joints so I know when I’ve gone far enough.

When I’m trying to explain what is off about each part of my body that is in pain, it feels that as if it doesn’t have a center. And warming up is not enough to fix all that and I usually do lengthy ones. I have to do a whole nervous system awakening before the warm up. Keep that in mind as it’s highly associated with neurodiversity.
