This is the story of the guest room—once known as The Blue Room™ and honestly… a bit of an identity crisis in paint form.Now to be clear: it’s not that the dark blue wasn’t pretty—it was. It just wasn’t… me. I think I was still riding the wave of my husband’s office makeover (which was full-on dark academia fantasy land), and maybe, just maybe, that influence snuck into this room. Regal? Yes. Right for this house? Not really.The room started getting a makeover not long after we moved in. First came some simple tall chair rail to break up the boxy vibe. Then about a year later I refinished the floors (because chaos is my love language). Then picture frame molding And finally—paint. So much paint.Blue is honestly one of the hardest colors I’ve ever worked with. I don’t know why I keep doing this to myself. Maybe I believe this time will be different. (It never is.) In east-facing rooms especially, blue tends to lean sad—like, “why do I feel like journaling in a Jane Austen fog” sad. Boothbay Gray was my first pick, and I’m sorry to that color but… not in this house, not in this room, not in this light.I tried everything to make the room feel right—swapped out decor, rearranged furniture, changed bedding, lit every candle I own… but it still felt off. Eventually, I realized the problem wasn’t the decor. It was the vibe. So I ditched the blue and went with a warm white.I know, I know—white can feel like a cop-out. But in this room? It made all the difference. Especially paired with beadboard (which this house actually used in its original construction). Looking back, I did this room right after my husband’s office, and I think his love of all things moody, royal, and dark-academia might’ve rubbed off a little too much. Still stunning, but it never quite fit with the rest of the house or its vibe. The makeover journey began shortly after we moved in.
