On Thursday, June 16, 1966, Prince Henry Wassajja Kagima, brother to Kabaka Mutesa II, spoke to ITN in London following the attack on the Buganda Kingdom palace in May. 🔴 Key Moments from the Interview: ITN interviewer: "Is your brother dead or alive?" Prince Henry: "My information I manage to have on this matter is that he escaped from the palace and he is alive." 🔴 Background to the Mengo Crisis: The Ndaiga Scheme: Buganda's plan to settle Baganda in disputed "lost counties" (Buyaga & Bugangaizi) led to tension with Bunyoro. 1964 Referendum: The counties voted to rejoin Bunyoro, but Buganda rejected the results, fueling a power struggle. The Power Struggle: Prime Minister Milton Obote and Kabaka Mutesa II clashed, escalating tensions in the kingdom. 🔴 The Mengo Crisis – May 1966: Obote, with Idi Amin’s help, attacked Mengo Palace, sparking violence and destruction. Kabaka Mutesa II fled into exile in England, where he lived until his death in 1969. 🔴 Aftermath: Obote consolidated power and abolished traditional kingdoms. Idi Amin rose to prominence, eventually staging a coup in 1971. This marked a turning point for Uganda, as the central government restructured its authority and ended centuries-old traditions. #MengoCrisis #KabakaMutesaII #PrinceHenry #UgandaHistory #OboteEra #IdiAmin #ugandatiktok #uganda #ughistory #obote @Charles Peter Mayiga @Uganda Nostalgic 🇺🇬 @Buganda_Kingdom
