In preschoolers, friendly ties are quickly created and quickly broken. It is difficult for a child to understand why someone thinks differently from him or her and acts against his or her wishes. In older preschoolers and younger schoolchildren (approximately 5-9 years old), friendships become less pragmatic, the child begins to value friendship and tolerate the antics of his or her comrades. At this time, jealousy in friendship appears. Children's understanding of friendship tends to focus more on areas such as shared activities, physical closeness, and shared expectations. These friendships provide opportunities for play and self-regulation. Most children tend to describe friendship in terms of things like sharing, and children are more likely to share with someone they consider a friend. As children grow older, they become less individualistic and more aware of others. They gain the ability to empathize with their friends and enjoy playing in groups. They also experience peer rejection as they move through the middle childhood years. Forming good friendships at a young age helps a child better adapt to society later in life. By the age of 11-13, the approach to friendship changes, becoming based on emotional closeness. During adolescence, friendships become “more generous, sincere, supportive, and spontaneous.” Teens tend to seek out peers who can provide these qualities in mutual relationships and avoid peers whose problematic behavior suggests they will not be able to meet these needs. In adolescents, friendships begin to emphasize shared values, loyalty, and common interests, rather than the physical concerns, such as closeness and access to play, that are more typical of childhood.
