Day 2, Teaching place. Keep this in mind while you’re practicing. You should be doing this lesson two or three times a day over the next week, and keep your lessons right around 10 to 15 minutes long. There are what we call the 3 D’s in dog training, duration, distance, distractions. This first week, time is most important! I don’t care if you can’t get far away from your dog, yet, focus on spreading the time between the intermittent reward every lesson. As your dog gets more comfortable with the bed, you also want to start them a few feet further away from the bed so they can learn to go to it on command. Place is a two part command, go to AND stay! You don’t have to use any other words. Like we learned yesterday, it’s important to say the word without movement. Do not say place while walking towards the bed. Say the word clearly, pause for one second, and then guide your dog to the bed. When you are bringing your dog to the dog bed, try and stop before the front of it. You don’t want to have to walk past the entire bed, especially after the first lesson. Your dog should be doing more work than you do. The reason we use an elevated dog bed is so that your dog can’t lay halfway onto the floor and a half way onto their bed. The elevated dog bed makes it more black and white, making the learning process faster and much easier for you. The reason we’re not going to reward the release come in at the moment, it’s because your dog stinks at being still. We want to put a great amount of focus on holding the position and incentivize that the dog bed is the greatest place in the world, but coming off is semi-boring. 30 day goal, Your dog holds this command for 30 minutes. Let’s get to work.
