Everything you have just can truthfully be said about almost every game. I have seen people be equally disengaged with Vampire, GURP's, Call of Cthulhu and dozens of games. I have had to coach players in World of Darkness, Star Trek, Star Wars ect. It is dishonest to say D&D is unique about it, but hey, rage bait drives traffic, right?

I dont disagree, but I think it also needs to be said that there are types of GMs who prefer that, who want all of the control, want there players to rely on them

This is why PF2e is my preferred fantasy TTRPG. The players NEED to work together against challenges the GMs make rather than just "Cast Fireball, Win Encounter." I find myself so much more engaged as a player in that game.

This is one of the many reasons I think of 5e as the McDonald's of TTRPGs

So 5e is bad if you play it wrong. If you made this same argument with any game, it'd still be right. So if it applies to everything, then it applies to nothing

Dungeons & Dragons is a war game that sometimes people talk over. It's not a role-playing game.
because of all the combat that people talk about, one might as well call Monopoly a role-playing game so long as you talk in character :p

DM are much easier to get to try a different sys then DnD only players.

the number of times I've asked a player "what's your spell save/maneuver DC?" and the player doesn't know. 😒

The most fun I’ve had in playing ttrpg’s for 30 years has been Ultraviolet Grasslands and the Black City. It’s EXTREMELY simple, not only for the players but also for the DM. It does the best job I’ve ever experienced encouraging interaction from everyone evenly. And that’s because the system (included in first edition and expanded into Our Golden Age, which is free) is very simple but the game already has the bones/framework for everything. From the world and it’s non-canon history that is created with the players at the beginning, quickly, to every possible location, NPC and monster (either premade or simply generated on the spot), everything is ready to go and the story that is told is completely unique every time. The character’s story and exploration are the only factors that haven’t been premade and it forces everyone to engage with those points because of it. If you haven’t played UVG than you’re missing out.

This is why I will die on the hill that not only are there better games at being both about Dungeons and/or Dragons, but that those games are often better at being games too. I don’t think I’ve ever sat at a table that actually fully engaged with the D&D rules.

I mean it's an easy game but that's not necessarily a bad thing, the lack of engagement come from many places and I'm sorry but you don't really need to know the lore to play VtM.. the DMs have the same responsibility in all of those games to play the games, they're all just different types of games

It’s Ttrpg lite. It should be a gateway to better games and not the end state.

Nothing you have said is specific to any one gaming system. You can have lazy, bad players in VtM just like in 5e. You can have permissive DMs who allow themselves to take on these rules/gaming burdens in any system. There are less crunchy and more crunchy systems out there…none of that matters if your group just wants to show up, throw dice, kill stuff and be entirely uninvolved with the lore or your plot. Here’s a take: if you’re dm’ing this type of group and it was clear in your session zero what your expectations are, then find new players.

eh this is partly on DM's for not requiring there players to engage with their characters or know their character abilities. as a dm i dont hand hold unless you're a new player and even then I make the players learn their class. if you dont hand hold those unengaged pc will die which is fine dont be afraid to of pc death.

Thank you, I’ve been trying to find the words for why I dislike D&D and why it’s so hard to shift D20 players away from it. This makes near perfect sense now.

I never thought of it like that but I see your point. I branched out if D&D with Shadowrun and despite the reputation of being really crunchy and complex I found it was actually less stressful and I think it’s because it actually asked less from me and allowed me to spread some of the work onto the players.
