it was absolutely the most strategic choice to remain single to maintain the stability of the nation. she saw all the many ways marriage to either other englishman or someone from elsewhere could cause upheaval, especially for a female monarch. adopting the virgin queen persona to embody her singleness was such a brilliant political play—imo part of what makes her such a legend!!

she literally was traumatised by marriage and how men treated their wives from the stories of how her mother was beheaded at 2 years old how her stepmother Jane died from childbirth complications her other stepmother katherine howard was literally beheaded and how she herself was harrrased by Thomas Seymour all culminating with how Philip treated her sister Mary and how Mary queen of Scots was overthrown by her advisors the minute she gave birth to a son they honestly think she would ever in a million years rule with a man 🤨🤨🤨
